Day in the life of a DevOps Engineer at FXC Intelligence
A couple of weeks ago, we heard from Jon, our DevOps Lead, about his role and what he gets up to. This week, I spoke with Harry Abbott, one of our DevOps Engineers, to find out more about what his typical day looks like!

Tell us about your journey at FXC so far:
I joined FXC Intelligence as a DevOps Engineer in the summer of 2024, at the beginning of the AWS migration. Throughout my time here, I've had a mix of learning and maintaining the current stack, while working to construct a shiny new one on AWS.
Describe your typical workday:
First thing every morning, I’ll join the quick standup, where we discuss any issues from the day before and what work is ongoing, then usually I just get to work on whatever tickets I have lined up for that day. These can range from ad-hoc BAU work to building new stuff on AWS, or ongoing maintenance of the current stack.
Which of your responsibilities has the biggest impact for FXC as a company?
Quite a few of the things I do have a big impact! Obviously, working on prod systems has the potential for the biggest impact, but that's not the type of impact we want, haha!
When it's my turn on the dev support rota, I get to interact more with the other teams to support them for their ad-hoc requests, so that's a rewarding experience where you positively impact others.
What’s the most rewarding part of your job?
Getting to work with new tech, problem solving, and always learning new things, getting to take ownership of what we build.
What’s the biggest challenge you face in your role?
Because of the nature of DevOps work, there is quite a wide variety of problems you get to work on, and some of those problems can be quite abstract (especially with k8s and on AWS).
What’s been your favourite social at FXC so far?
The F1 Arcade social was good fun and brought out a lot of people's competitive sides, which was funny to see. I’m still waiting for the Red Bull F1 scout to get back to me :/
